The Broken Relationships of Star Trek: The Next Generation (In Depth Analysis Ep 2)

The Broken Relationships of Star Trek: The Next Generation (In Depth Analysis Episode 2) from Davis M.J. Aurini on Vimeo.

Episode 2 of In Depth Analysis: Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek was as much of a statement of its time as it was a look towards the future. By taking a cynical (and comedic) look at the relationship troubles of the main characters of the series, we can learn a thing or two about how the present day dating market developed.

Episodes 3 and 4 are going to be, respectively, “The Marxist Roots of Neo Conservatism” and a compare and contrast between strategy games like Civ, MoO, and Masters of Magic to a perfect game like Chess or Go, as well as some of the history for these franchises, et cetera.

The script for 3 is about 20% written; I’m still settling in to the new location, and hopefully I’ll have a desk within the week (it’s a LOT easier and faster to do stuff like video editing with a mouse instead of a touchpad); additionally I’m redoing the intros and whatnot for my videos, as per the new location, and I’ve been given a challenging Aurini’s insight video that I’m still trying to suss out the correct approach to.

The shakeup has kept me AFK lately, but we’ll be returning to a new schedule shortly!

So, was the idea that Data was an android his personal delusion? On what episode or movie was this revealed? As a fan of Star Trek TNG back in the day I distinctly remember a few episodes that suggest this is impossible. There was one where Riker turned Data on and off and another where Data had his head blown off and then screwed back on. If it was exposed as a delusion the show’s continuity is utter spaghetti.
